When I was a child, my parents established the priority of opening God's Word around the breakfast table. I cherish the memories I have of seeing Mom and/or Dad having their morning devotions there before we, their three children, joined them. I remember how we took turns reading the Bible and Our Daily Bread together. What a special memory!
Thank you Mom & Dad for showing me how to prioritize needing and reading God's Word!
Our family begins our school day with a morning devotion. We read the Proverb for the day (28th day-read 28th chapter), a chapter or two from a book in the Bible, which happens to be Exodus currently, and then a chapter from a book related to whatever 'family matter' we need to learn more about. We've always encouraged the children to read the Psalms for their personal quiet time before we gather for our devotion time.
We value the counsel of those who love the LORD and His Word! Our bookshelves are full of many wonderful resources, but we value/prioritize God's Word the most!
I am very grateful for my husband's vision for our children/family. He gives me encouragement often when I'm weary of the commitment we've made to home educate our children; "If you do not accomplish anything else, make sure you READ GOD'S WORD."
This special time together is the highlight of my day, for we are often met with challenges that only God's Word can help us with! It gives me JOY to know God's promises are TRUE and TIMELESS, even when I'm weary! I pray almost daily that this precious time together will prove to be fruitful and encouraging to my children in the days/years to come!
I came across this hymn last week as I browsed through The Broadman Hymnal, © 1940, while looking for another song. Miss Fran Hawk, a treasured family friend, gave me this hymnal many years ago. I have since enjoyed collecting hymnbooks, and love looking/playing through them!
Miss Hawk, thank you for passing along this awesome treasure to me!
I believe you'll find this song to be an encouragement.
I can not imagine a greater treasure to leave our children than the pages of a worn Bible, coupled with memories of many days/years shared reading it together!
May the LORD bless our desires and efforts to prioritize reading HIS Holy Word together!
We should never underestimate the MONUMENTAL impact this priority will have on each child's life!
My Mother's Bible
There's a dear and precious Book, Tho' it's worn and faded now,
Which recalls those happy days of long ago;
When I stood at mother's knee, with her hand upon my brow,
And I heard her voice in gentle tones and low.
Chorus:
Blessed Book, Precious Book,
On thy dear old tear stained leaves I love to look;
Thou are sweeter day by day, As I walk the narrow way,
That leads at last to that bright home above.
As she read the stories o'er, Of those mighty men of old,
Of Joseph and of Daniel and their trials;
Of little David bold, Who became a king at last;
Of Satan with his many wicked wiles.
Chorus:
Blessed Book, Precious Book,
On thy dear old tear stained leaves I love to look;
Thou are sweeter day by day, As I walk the narrow way,
That leads at last to that bright home above.
Then she read of Jesus love, As He blest the children dear,
How He suffered, bled and died upon the tree;
Of His heavy load of care, Then she dried my flowing tears
With her kisses as she said it was for me.
Chorus:
Blessed Book Precious Book,
On thy dear old tear stained leaves I love to look;
Thou are sweeter day by day, As I walk the narrow way,
That leads at last to that bright home above.
Well, those days are past and gone, But their mem'ry lingers still,
And the dear old Book each day has been my guide;
And I seek to do His will, As my mother taught me then,
And ever in my heart His words abide.
Chorus:
Blessed Book, Precious Book,
On thy dear old tear stained leaves I love to look;
Thou are sweeter day by day,
As I walk the narrow way
That leads at last to that bright home above.

"For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.
For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater:
So shall my Word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it"
(Isaiah 55:9-11).
Oh LORD, may these words become a reality in the lives and hearts of our children!
