❤️ Heart for Home ❤️

“Scripture is the basis for my commitment to being a homemaker, and if I never saw any other reason to love it, never saw the fruit, never understood the importance of the role, that should still be enough. Paul lays out the importance of older women teaching younger women to be “self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled” (Titus 2:5). And Proverbs 31 describes a glorious picture of the woman who is clothed in strength and dignity as she gives herself to the needs of her household.

….

Is there any other work I could be doing that would be this exponentially fruitful or influential? A hundred years from now, I hope there are people who do not know my name or remember me, but nevertheless carry about with them seeds of faithful living that were first planted in the soil of this home.

….

May God give us all eyes to see it, and hearts to imagine it. The end of all our small daily plantings may be a harvest of staggering beauty.”

Today was a great day of encouraging my life long delight of God’s call on my life to be a wife, mom, and keeper of our home.

While attending to chores and accomplishing some crafts this morning, I watched short inspirational videos and listened to conversational podcasts by this writer, Rachel, and her sister, Rebekah Merkle.

Their encouragement reminded me of an earlier season of my life when the LORD called me out of the workplace to come home to accomplish His purpose, which happened to be an answered prayer of mine.

Resigning my employment was bitter sweet, but I never doubted our baby was the new and greater purpose for my days following that season of work.

The night I went into labor was the early signal that my next day’s work responsibilities would come to a close.  I’d planned to begin working half days that week.  Instead, that day the LORD  satisfied the deepest longing of my heart by giving me the first of four babies to dearly, deeply love and enjoy.  I was given soo much more to treasure and thank the LORD for!!

This was not a matter Mark and I ever doubted was right, nor needed further discussion about!  Before we ever seriously dated, I clearly remember the evening we sat in  Pizza Hut after work when he asked me, “What do you want to do with your life?”

I immediately replied,  “Ultimately, to one day become a wife and stay at home mommy.”

I do not recall any concern for his reaction.  I was encouraged he asked, but did not think anything more about his interest.  Later he told me, “That night I knew I wanted to pursue you, and I had a great appreciation for your aim in life.  I’m thankful I asked you that question.”

I don’t recall when we discussed my reason for such a desire, but eventually that conversation happened.

My mom was always the inspiration and joy I experienced for returning home from school everyday.  Our home was always clean and ordered, there were  after school snacks which sometimes was more than enough delight for my senses:  homemade cookies or orange glazed donuts were some of the special treats we enjoyed.  There were also the really special discoveries of homemade clothes, a redecorated bedroom with freshly painted pink walls and multicolored floral floor length curtains (made from sheets) and a newly painted (re)salvaged wicker desk.  Mom enjoyed sewing and decorating, so my bedroom was redecorated more than once.  I was amazed by my Mom’s inspired enthusiasm for making our home so homey, welcoming, and enjoyable.  There was the time when a reupholstered piece of furniture was completed and added to the family room for extra comfortable seating.  My mom was very crafty and skilled with her hands; she was very project oriented.  She oft set up a work space in the garage to refinish furniture.  She was hospitable and enjoyed hosting dinners and parties.  She never seemed to mind preparing food for her family, washing clothes, ironing pillow cases (or boxer shorts 😂) and our clothes, cleaning house, or accomplishing her own personal crafts and goals.  She delighted in having a  place in our home to thrive and accomplish God’s call.

I admired so much about her, especially her uncanny ability and resourceful ways to make something old look beautiful and useful!  Not only was I attracted to her industriousness and creativity, she was actively involved with my Girl Scout troop activities, and was willing to help me earn more badges.

Mom could do everything!!

She once preserved the lives of four puppies and their young mom who surprisingly and quietly birthed 7 puppies on the concrete floor of our double car garage on the coldest night of the new year.  She was good at providing care for our pets on numerous occasions, rehabilitating our dachshunds for weeks at a time in a baby play pen because they were good at injuring their backs.  They mattered also!

Mom had patience to tolerate my beginner driving excursions, braving trips to Arlington to take me to weekly music lessons. I’ll never forget the time the power steering fluid leaked  out while I was driving, and we ended up, mid turn, in the front yard of a house on the corner of a street (nearby, actually) because I was not prepared for such a surprise, nor strong enough to complete the powerless steering wheel turn.  🙈

My Mother Dear lived out an active strength and beautiful presence in my life and in our home that I still greatly treasure and admire!!

Her dignity represented her love for the LORD, my dad, and our family, extending to generations of those to whom we were and are related!  Because of her place in the home, she could love many individuals and families, selflessly.  She served our church and our neighbors/community.  I neglected to say she gave of herself to a Sunday School class of 4 1/2 year old preschoolers and the ladies who served there together each week.  I also neglected to mention the numerous years she served as the Girl Scout Cookie Chairman for my troop which required filling our garage with hundreds of boxes of Girl Scout cookies each year.

My mom was and is the heart of our lives, and our home was the nest from which her love and gifts were demonstrated and extended to the lives of many others.

My mom helped to give me a vision for being H❤️ME!

It encouraged me to know Mark had given thought to why he desired his future wife to be a keeper at home.  Eventually, it encouraged me to know he had a personal desire and commitment to prioritize and sacrifice of himself to provide the kind of upbringing for our children that I enjoyed and treasured as a child.

Today my nest is nearing empty.

This season has been a hard adjustment for me. John remains, and works long hours many days, but is still a delight to love and serve.  I consider it an honor to be his mom.  I enjoy the privilege of washing his fishy-smelly clothes (because he works in a fishery business) and prepare his meals for the time he remains.

Today I’ve enjoyed cleaning up the remnants of hosting a Bible study here last night.  What a privilege!!  Because I was home alone, I could listen and watch how the LORD uses the wonderful gift and means of technology to deliver wise counsel from [younger] ladies to encourage my spirit.

I pray my vision and place of influence here will one day bear fruit of the Holy Spirit’s work to regenerate many more hearts and families that will live to seek the LORD.  I pray education in the homes of our children will become a limitless place of learning who God is, that He is the source of all wisdom and practical, principled living.  If that is not His will, I pray He will guide our adult children and grandchildren on the path He has ordained for them, however different.  I pray our grandchildren will be disciplined and nurtured in God’s Word and perfect ways, encouraged by His faithfulness, held by His steadfast love and mercy to thousands who fear Him and live to please Him.  I pray He will give them sincere faith and boldness to answer His call on their lives, for His glory, so they will know His Word is living and active, true, of greatest value, above all, to be most treasured and trusted!

I am thankful for the faith and ministry of wives and moms whose calls include working from home to encourage others to be simply and obediently H❤️ME, where God has called and equipped them to love and serve Him, and the families He’s gifted them!

I have known this JOY!

I am thankful!

Cancer: How Unsearchable His ways

Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!

“For who has known the mind of the Lord,
or who has been his counselor?”

“Or who has given a gift to him
    that he might be repaid?”

For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.

Romans 11:33-36

The LORD uses ALL that He wills, for our good and His glory.

I was diagnosed with breast cancer in late October, 2017.  As much as I wanted to trust the LORD and “take, content, what He hath sent”, I struggled.  Some days were, ... not good.  However, he used this chapter to recalibrate my heart…

Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and all that is within me,
    bless his holy name!

Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and forget not all his benefits,

who forgives all your iniquity,
    who heals all your diseases,

who redeems your life from the pit,
who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy,

who satisfies you with good
so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's.

Psalm 103:1-5…

The LORD used this health trial to draw me closer to Himself. I am thankful! He supplied the faithful, present aide of my husband’s washing of God’s Word, my family, and close friends, who came alongside to support me with Scripture and prayer.  I remember feeling my head  weighed down with more than enough information to process.  It was very encouraging to hear my husband’s words, “You can’t make a mistake.  Rest in the Shepherd’s care…”

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

He makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters.

He restores my soul.
He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
Psalm 23:1-3

Verse 3 especially resonated over and over to comfort me.

Dear family and friends took time to call and write encouraging reminders to steer my heart to look to Him for wisdom and comfort.  Some visited… The world had nothing to supply that great need for me.
God’s presence through His Word did!
What a help and comfort it was to return home every afternoon from my treatments to meditate and nap on truths to renew my spirit!!

The LORD placed people all along the way to walk that path with me.  He’d walked it before me … not cancer, but suffering!!! He chose suffering for me that I might learn to fellowship with Him there!!   I was well aware He was leading me down a path I wouldn’t choose.  It didn’t feel good, but I knew it was for the sanctification of my heart and life.  As much as I did not want THAT experience, I was comforted to know He was with me, all the way through it.  There were days I felt very alone, and low. Yet, He drew me out of that loneliness, and proved Himself to be  more than enough, faithful, and compassionately tender Father!

My loving husband was by my side. He took me to all of my appointments.  We grew together through suffering in that trial. He prayed and listened, and sometimes cried with me. He handled all the financial concerns and responsibilities with great confidence our bills were the least of my/our concerns (we didn’t have insurance).  Our faith could not be in health insurance, though it was tempting to believe we were lacking what many, actually the majority, believed was a necessary means of  my good health care, worth, and provision, through such a trial.  One doctor denied me as a patient because I did not have insurance.  As hurtful and embarrassing as that was, I quickly learned MD Anderson had another doctor who would accept and treat me.  I could not have been more encouraged and thankful to know God’s care for me was personal and perfect. I gained confidence that my care and faith was in Christ’s sustaining love and care for me. My new medical oncologist was a very compassionate, pregnant woman 😂, and she understood me as a mom who had concerns for the future. Her tenderness was prescribed by God for me!!  🙌🏼
Being a “self pay” patient taxed and overwhelmed me initially, but Mark faithfully, daily reminded me that God was ultimately the one who would provide all that was needed and everything more for my physical and spiritual abundance.
Samaritans Ministries, the medical co-op which we were and still are members of, helped us through that season to pay our bills… the abundance of personal, handwritten cards that came in the mail with checks was an amazing daily blessing and boost for me.

Bless the Lord, all his hosts, his ministers, who do his will!

Bless the Lord, all his works, in all places of his dominion.
Bless the Lord, O my soul!
Psalm 103:21-22

In October of 2019, we paid off the last of  my cancer expenses (note: that might have happened sooner, but in the mix of that season we also had an unexpected transmission repair for our Suburban 🙌🏼).

The LORD gave of Himself in abundance to us!
He added grace upon grace by giving me His peace and encouragement. One of the most sustaining and encouraging comforts to me was unexpected, surprising reminders that God’s provision and care came by His hand:  medical bills were reduced, and gracious providers and medical staff were soo personally caring and kind!  They were a medical family for me daily for four straight weeks of daily radiation, which really meant A LOT!!

My Dear Mom walked a similar path just five years earlier, but she endured a more extensive treatment.
She could not be physically present through my treatment, because she’d just had foot surgery, and was ordered to recover as much as possible by staying off of her foot.  However, she called faithfully, almost daily, to check on me.  🥰

My Dear Dad… 😭
I think so much of him now that he’s gone, and I thank the LORD over and over again for his tender heart expressed to me.  When mom couldn’t be with me the day of my biopsy, he came and sat beside me in the waiting room because that’s as far as they’d allow him to go. He held my hand and waited to walk me out, just because he wanted to be by my side!  🥰  He loved me well, and especially more so when he knew my mom could not be there for me!!

My daughter… 😭
She cannot know … nor am I able to express the deep love and gratitude I have for her, for the gift she was and will always be.

There are Dear Ones who linger in my heart and mind who supported me.  The LORD was and is still gracious to encourage me today through them.  They haven’t forgotten, and they personally understand such a diagnosis and the temptation to fear cancer’s return.

The LORD is Faithful.
He has appointed/numbered my days, every one, to care for me by His ALL SUFFICIENT wisdom and steadfast love.
He lead me down that path by His righteous, compassionate care, for His name's sake!!
I remember back on that season and I am thankful!!  He carried me through it!!  I praise Him!!
He restored my soul from so much I feared, mostly fear of failing to trust Him when I was soo very weak for want of a better understanding of who He is!!
Everything I confused for gain and good, He’s given me in Himself by allowing me to know Him better by reading His word!
He satisfies me differently than I oft anticipate, but I am still learning His best gift is Himself.

I pray the following article will be read and received in a timely way by those who need its truth and encouragement!!  For those who may not think they need this article for themselves, please share with someone you love.  You never know when it may be needed.
A cancer diagnosis is not the last word!!

“Glory to God…”

O God, I confess I am not worthy to rock that little babe or wash its diapers, or to be entrusted with the care of a child and its mother. How is it that I without any merit have come to this distinction of being certain that I am serving thy creature and thy most precious will?

Oh, how gladly will I do so. Though the duty should be even more insignificant and despised, neither frost nor heat, neither drudgery nor labor will distress me for I am certain that it is thus pleasing in thy sight.

An untimely and unfortunate slab leak occurred in the home of our oldest son‘s family a week before Christmas!

Initially water mitigation occurred quickly, but then the hardest and lengthiest wait for them began a few days before Christmas and stretched out until after the New Year.

Once the leak detection company was lined up by their insurance company, they scheduled and found the location of the leak,

and within 24 hours the plumber restored water flow to their home.  What a blessed luxury!

While they waited, Caroline persevered by packing up their belongings every day to take to our house…

and each night we sent them home with our love and 2 large five gallon containers filled with water. ☺️

Their daily routine became our delight.

We were thankful to open our home to them, and enjoy their presence!

Playing, reading, running errands, and maintaining daily chores was absolutely more fun…

Could I have been more thankful??

I’m not sure how or where I would have contained the gratitude!!   🥰

I hope by coming to our home their burdens were halved and concerns eased.

Our joys were definitely multiplied!!

“Father, Thank you…!!”

At the end of every story, Felicity says, “Amen!”

Imperishable and Precious

If you feel your value lies in being merely decorative, I fear that someday you might find yourself believing that’s all that you really are. Time erodes all such beauty, but what it cannot diminish is the wonderful workings of your mind: Your humor, your kindness, and your moral courage. These are the things I cherish so in you. I so wish I could give my girls a more just world. But I know you’ll make it a better place.

Marmee, Louisa May Alcott

Father,

May the adorning of her heart be pleasing to You, with imperishable and precious beauty that cannot be compared to what the culture offers her today!

Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear—

but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God's sight is very precious.

Live to Die

DYING TO SELF

When you are forgotten or neglected or purposely set at naught, and you sting and hurt with the insult or the oversight, but your heart is happy, being counted worthy to suffer for Christ-

that is dying to self.

When your good is evil spoken of, when your wishes are crossed, your advice disregarded, your opinions ridiculed and you refuse to let anger rise in your heart, or even defend yourself, but take all in patient loving silence-

that is dying to self.

When you lovingly and patiently bear any disorder, any irregularity, or any annoyance, when you can stand face to face with waste, folly, extravagance, spiritual insensibility, and endure it as Jesus endured it-

that is dying to self.

When you are content with any food, any offering, any raiment, any climate, any society, any attitude, any interruption by the will of God-

that is dying to self.

When you never care to refer to yourself in conversation, or to record your own good works, or itch after commendation, when you can truly love to be unknown-

that is dying to self.

When you see your brother prosper and have his needs met and can honestly rejoice with him in spirit and feel no envy nor question God, while your own needs are far greater and in desperate circumstances-

that is dying to self.

When you can receive correction and reproof from one of less stature than yourself, can humbly submit inwardly as well as outwardly, finding no rebellion or resentment rising up within your heart-

that is dying to self.

I soo enjoy cut arrangements in my home.

For the love of Christ controls us,

because we have concluded this:

that one has died for all.

Therefore all have died;

And he died for all, that those who live

might no longer live for themselves but for

him who for their sake died and was raised.
